Murali Kartik the little buddha of Kolkata Knight Riders

From the time that he has become a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Murali Kartik is one bowler for the team who has performed consistently, and have most of the times applied the breaks to check the raining of runs. Even then, he is one of the most unsung bowlers of the team, as he seems to be pushed into the shadows of Ishant Sharma and Shane Bond.

His figures reflect his performance. In the first match against Deccan Chargers and bowling to Adam Gilchrist, he conceded only 17 runs in his 3 overs, while in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore he gave 22 runs but scalped 2 wickets. Similarly, in the third match against Chennai Super Kings, when Dhoni was in a murderous mood, Murali Kartik only gave 21 runs in his quota of four overs. There is no other spinner in any team, who has returned with such fabulous bowling figures, but encomiums are still not being sung, nor is Murali Kartik hogging any limelight. But Murali is unfazed, as his career has been resurrected after his association with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

It indeed is one of the ironies of the game of cricket that even though you may be performing at the optimum levels, if you do not throw an attitude you are not considered important to be focused upon. The flip side to this maxim, however, is that if the performers like Kartik are dropped from the team the fortunes of the team suffers like anything.

From this perspective Kartik indeed is in the mould of Anil Kumble, dignity personified who is content with playing his part and then forgets about the performance subsequently.

Murali Kartik is one of the few spinners who define his persona by his sartorial appearance. It is characterized by the beads that he sports in his neck and it is worn in such a manner that it appears as if they keep him in tight leash reflected from his meanness to give away the runs.

At a time when Indian cricket is looking for a quality spinner who can tantalize and mesmerize the opposition Murali Kartik is a bowler who needs to be given one more chance to prove his worth for the team. After all, he is bowling against one of the finest players of spin the IPL, and winning his personal battles most of the times. If he is able to do it in the IPL, he can do it with the same conviction for the national team as well.
