Royal Challengers scraped home to a thrilling win against Team Chennai at the Kingsmead to boost their chances of grabbing a semifinal spot at IPL Season Two.
The two-wicket victory came with just two balls remaining, and after their opponents had all but stopped them from getting to what looked an easy target.
Matthew Hayden was at it again, justifying his Orange Cap with a power-packed 60, but Anil Kumble, Jacques Kallis and R. Vinay Kumar managed to do enough damage as Team Chennai crumbled after the good start at the Kingsmead on Thursday.
But if 129 was well below the expectations from a team that’s hot favourite to win IPL Season Two, and even looked easy meat for the Royal Challengers, Dhoni & Co. made sure every run counted. Only, it just wasn’t enough against a team that was desperate for a win.
Royal Challengers lost three quick wickets, including that of Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis before Ross Taylor again came to the rescue of his team.
Taylor, who had given the Challengers victory from an impossible situation against the Knight Riders, stitched together a 56-run partnership with Virat Kohli to resurrect hopes. But when Balaji removed Kohli and Muralitharan dismissed Boucher, Team Chennai were again the favourites.
