Most of the IPL teams were craving for Durban as their base for the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Last year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have gone on to clinch it, and their five-day camp before the IPL will take place in the city, which boasts of a huge Indian population.
The CSK bosses, who are currently in South Africa, held talks with Cricket South Africa (CSA) and IPL authorities to ensure that they get Durban as their base.
According to CSK sources, “it was the best thing that could have happened to the team” before the tournament.
It was learnt that the CSK team will have their camp in Durban from April 8 with 23 players. There, the team may play a couple of practice games, and CSA has promised to extend full support.
On April 16, the team will move to Cape Town for a carnival that is being organised by the IPL organising committee.
All the teams will be present in the carnival to promote IPL just before it takes off. “We believe it’ll be a big success. In fact, the kind of response that we’re getting from the people here, is absolutely overwhelming…Don’t be surprised if many of the matches go full-house,” an IPL source said.
After the carnival, all the teams will move to the venues of their first games. CSK play their first game against Mumbai Indians in Cape Town.
