Matthew Hayden likely to be available for IPL

Indian Premier League’s Chennai franchise rejoiced at the possibility of Matthew Hayden being available to play for them for the full season after he quit international cricket on Tuesday.

Hayden, who played only four out of 14 league matches in the inaugural IPL season last year, was struggling to strike form for some time before he decided to walk into the sunset.

“His future with IPL was never in doubt as he had already made it clear before that he will play for Chennai,” said VB Chandrasekhar, Chennai Super King’s director of cricket operations.

“It’s sad that his international cricket had to end the way it did but he was a great player for Australia and I am glad that he would continue playing for us.

His (Achilles tendon) injury (last year) put him out of action for a while and that affected him.

“As for us, it would be great that he would be available for the entire tournament. If only we had him in the end stages last year, we could have won the trophy. He leads by example and is a great motivator for the youngsters in the side,” Chandrasekhar was quoted as saying by a website.

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai team finished runners-up behind Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals last year.
