Australian coaches with ‘innovative’ theories invariably spell bad news for Sourav Ganguly. Greg Chappell’s stint with Team India saw Sourav losing the captaincy and – for a while – his place in the squad. Now, the Prince of Kolkata is being asked to share his throne as skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders with Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle.
The bizarre idea was apparently the brainwave of former Australian coach John Buchanan – whose mumbo-jumbo had once led Shane Warne to memorably remark, ‘‘A coach is something you travel in to get to and from the game.’’
Ganguly refrained from any such remarks during a press conference at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. But his body language spoke volumes. The man who led India to a record 21 Test wins spent most of the time with his head down.
Never have a captain and coach looked as distant as Sourav and Buchanan did during the 30-minute session that ended with some asking Sourav whether he was jinxed around Australian coaches. Sourav preferred to duck that one.
