Sourav Ganguly sole KKR captain, for now

Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan has called temporary truce in the ongoing confrontation between last year’s captain Sourav Ganguly and head coach John Buchanan over the contentious captaincy issue.

In a bit to douse the controversy over Buchanan’s multi-captain theory, SRK played peacemaker throughout a marathon meeting on Tuesday with the two principal protagonists, later indicating that “as of now” Ganguly would remain the team’s sole captain.

A final decision, though, will be taken only after a two-week camp in South Africa, meaning a window has been left open for Buchanan to implement his ideas away from the media’s glare in Bloemfontein, where the team will be based during IPL Season 2.

With Sourav and Buchanan refusing to see eye-to-eye on the issue, SRK got down to cooling tempers and came up with a solution which is likely to temporarily appease both parties.

An official KKR press statement issued later also sought to douse the fires, suggesting the franchise was in damage control mode.

“The term multi-captains has raised a few eyebrows and questions. The idea is to have a set of strategists, as is always the case classically in cricket… a team of 4 or 5 core experts in the field of fielding, bowling, batting etc,” the statement read.

“These coaches or strategists will assist the one captain on the field with their viewpoints and game plans set earlier or shoot from the hip, as the case may be. The captain for the team is one and one only, as is the case in most sports. All internal decisions are taken collectively by the core cricketing team which comprises John, Sourav, Matthew Mott and a few others. There is no dissent on that.”

“We have immense respect for the two senior-most members of our KKR team and all decisions are taken in tandem. As the squad has not been finalized because of the venue change etc, we will take a call on the captain, vice-captain and the team after the sessions in South Africa prior to the first game,” the statement said.

Sourav, who flew out to Mumbai on Tuesday morning to attend a promotional event, was closeted with SRK, Buchanan and KKR’s other co-owner Jay Mehta, among others, for the better part of the afternoon.
