With the second edition of IPL being shifted to South Africa, the Team Kolkata management has decided to conduct its second camp with local players only. The camp begins at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, Mashrafe Mortaza, Brad Hodge, Angelo Mathews, Moises Henriques and Ajantha Mendis will now directly assemble in South Africa with Charl Langeveldt and Morne van Wyk before the tournament kicks off next month.
Sweating it out at the Eden from Wednesday will be Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Arindam Ghosh and Sourav Sarkar, along with former India captain Sourav Ganguly. Chief coach John Buchanan is expected to supervise the camp.
The team management doesn’t want to unnecessarily increase costs by bringing all the players here and then again flying them overseas. It feels that getting someone like South African Langeveldt to fly all the way to Kolkata and then back to his homeland doesn’t make sense.
Also, it will be too much to ask for from someone like Ishant Sharma or Brendon McCullum to come all the way from New Zealand to Kolkata after their long series for just a few days.
“At this point of time, it is not a commercially viable option to again call all the guys back to Kolkata. It is better that we have the final camp in South Africa.” an official said.
