After his successful stint with Team India, coach Gary Kirsten’s next assignment could be with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
According to sources, Kirsten will not be joining the Sachin Tendulkar – led team this season, but he has been lined up for the job next year.
The Mumbai Indians have already engaged former South African pacer Shaun Pollock as their mentor-cum-bowling coach this season. “MI are in touch with Kirsten and he may join the team next year,” a source said.
Kirsten has already given his resignation letter to the cricket board, but sources said the players were still trying to get him to change his mind.
“We really want him to stay on, but it all depends on whether he is keen or not,” an Indian cricketer said. Sources said that even the BCCI was with the players on this one and may even ask him to stay on. “We have just finished the World Cup. We will meet and take it from there,” a top BCCI official said. Kirsten was not available for comments.
Kirsten, reportedly, is also in talks with New South Wales – one of Australia’s leading domestic teams – to look after their T20 side.
Cricket South Africa has also approached him. “He wants to spend more time with his family and is keen to work for his academy. The Twenty20 Big Bash in Australia happens around Christmas, which is for just one month. And then, he would have to spend two months in India for the IPL. This would suit him perfectly,” a source close to the development added.
