New things about IPL 2009

If the first players’ auction a year ago was a free for all bout between eight heavy weight franchises, the exercise for the second edition of the Indian Premier League this year was more a battle of wits with the bidders waiting for the right opportunity to score a point. Here is a list of things which will be new for this second edition of IPL.

  • Shilpa Shetty will launch a talent hunt for cheerleaders for her Rajasthan IPL team.
  • Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty have invested Rs. 75 crore for a 12 per cent stake in the Rajasthan team. .
  • Riya Sen is the brand ambassador for the IPL website.
  • Knights and Angels is a talent show on TV where Sourav Ganguly hunts for cheerleaders.
  • Chennai Super Kings Cheerleaders and Chennai Super Kings Juniors is a talent hunt for young cricketers, also coming on Vijay TV. Perscussionist Sivamani will perform along with the finalists of Chennai’s cheerleader hunt.
  • Preity Zinta’s Mohali team is also launching a talent hunt and a cricket academy in Mohali.
  • England’s Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff fetched $1.55 million each at the IPL auction, setting a record for the highest amount paid for players in the Twenty20 competition.
  • Aussie David Warner joins the Delhi team, while Michael Clarke pulls out of the IPL.
  • Bangalore trades Robin Uthappa for Mumbai’s Zaheer Khan. Mumbai’s Ashish Nehra is traded for Delhi’s Shikhar Dhawan. 
  • SRK’s team, the Knight Riders has Eden Gardens, but is checking out Cuttack stadium as well.
