Sports industry disappointed at IPL shifting to South Africa

Shifting of the IPL to South Africa not only spoiled the mood of cricket-lovers but also left the sports good manufacturers disappointed as they were expecting a boom in cricket equipments demand in the country.

“We were preparing for the mega cricket tournament of IPL and even increased our production to meet the hike in the demand of cricket equipments in the country, but now the lure of the industry was snatched by the organisers of IPL, who decided to shift it to South Africa,” Sanjay Kohli, President of Sports Industry said.

Currently the industry was facing a decline of 30 per cent of its business due to economic slow down, but were expecting at least 15 per cent recovery in case of IPL being held in India.

Asked whether the industry was hoping to get any increase in the demand of sports equipments in view of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Kohli said since the Games are individual-based and players generally use imported kits there would be no positive impact on the indigenous sports goods industry.
